My musical education lasted five years, at which point I could just about manage the first few bars of Handel's Largo (simplified version). When you consider that fact you will begin to realise the massive lack of musical talent that! possess. When it comes to being unable to learn an instrument I would back myself against the world. And yet I love music - any kind of music-and I am inordinately fond of musicians. Which is why I have enjoyed more than I can say the two years or more that Harry Stoneham
has provided the music for my television show. This record is a personal reflection on those two years, stirring the memories - as only music can - recreating those moments when you come face to face with your heroes. Every tune holds a memory, because every one was carefully selected at the time. We pondered awhile about the number to introduce the inimitable Muhammed Ali. Finally we chose / Feel Pretty. "What's the tune ?" he asked. I told him. "Why?" he asked. "Because you are the prettiest" I said. "You ain't as stupid as you look" he said.
We've had many music makers on the programme and they've created some magic moments, but none more thrilling than Michel Legrand singing with Petula Clark his own haunting song What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? Similarly, Johnny Mercer, who has written more good lyrics than most, croaking his way through one of his best songs. Dearly Beloved. The theme from The Odd Couple is a tribute to Jack Lemmon, one of the
nicest guys I ever met, while MacArthur Park stands as a reminder of a hilarious and unforgettable evening with Richard Harris who. for some unaccountable reason, did the show wearing a striped rugby shirt. The Love Theme from The Godfather is one of the songs Andy Williams sang on the show. We talked about cricket and he revealed more knowledge about the game than the American woman to whom! once explained the game. After half an hour of frantic explanation on my part and attentive listening by her she said to me "Gee, that's marvellous. And they do all that on horseback?"
Hello Young Lovers is a tribute to the lovely Deborah Kerr and the extraordinary Yul Brynner, while Love reminds me of interviewing John Lennon, who wouldn't talk to me unless sat inside a sack. I did and I can recommend the experience to anyone except heavy smokers. Satin Doll is for Duke Ellington. He played a solo on the show, then nodded across at Harry Stoneham, "Will dat cat play with me?" he
asked. That cat did and they swung into Sat Doll. June In January and Just One More Chance are reminders of Bing Crosby, who simply proved the adage that the bigger they are the nicer they are. It All Happens On Saturday is Harry Stoneham's own composition written specially for a spot on t show - he also wrote my signature tune Michael's Theme, and even now I can't hea without wanting to walk down a flight of st One last tune needs explaining As Time Go By. It's included because it's my favourite reminder of a great star I shall never intervie (certainly not this side of heaven) - Hump! Bogart. This is as i say, a personal choice: only hope you share my indulgence. MICHAEL PARKIN
